Valley Yarns Eva Vest
What Is Being Made
The Eva Vest is an open-front cardigan vest designed by Kirsten Hipsky, featuring a stand-up collar and waist shaping. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked in a bulky yarn, making it a relatively fast knit. The finished measurements range from 32 to 52 inches, accommodating multiple sizes. The vest showcases synchronized, mirrored cable panels that create visual interest on both the front and back sections.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its polished appearance:
- Cable knitting: The Eva Vest features mirrored cable panels on the left and right fronts, with cables worked using a cable needle. The Left Cable and Right Cable panels are mirror images of each other, creating balanced visual symmetry.
- Seaming: The vest is constructed using seamed construction, joining separate pieces together to create the finished garment.
- Waist shaping: Strategic decreases and increases are worked every 8 rows to create fitted waist shaping. Decreases are worked for the first 8 inches from the cast-on edge, followed by increases to create an hourglass silhouette.
- Ribbed edging: A k1, p1 rib is worked for 1 inch at the lower body to create a stable, finished edge.
- Armhole shaping: Bind-off shaping is used to create armholes, with varying stitch counts depending on the size being knitted.
Stitches Used
The Eva Vest incorporates fundamental and decorative stitches to build its structure and visual appeal:
- Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary stitch used for the body, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric.
- Ribbing (k1, p1): Used for the 1-inch lower edge to provide elasticity and a finished appearance.
- Cable stitches: Both Left Cable and Right Cable panels are worked over 13 stitches using 8-row repeats. These cables incorporate front crosses (FC) and back crosses (BC) to create the twisted, dimensional cable texture. The cables are separated by reverse stockinette (purl) stitches that allow them to stand out visually.
- Garter stitch elements: The pattern uses knit and purl combinations to frame the cables and create definition.
Materials
The Eva Vest is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Northampton Bulky, a 100% wool yarn available in multiple colorways, including Brown Heather as shown. The pattern requires 4 to 6 skeins depending on the finished size, with each skein containing 100 grams and 109 yards of yardage. US size 10.5 (6.50mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches are recommended to achieve the specified gauge of 3 stitches and 4 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch. Additional materials include a cable needle for working the cable crosses, and stitch markers in two colors to track pattern sections and shaping points throughout construction.
