Valley Yarns Park Pullover

What is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Park Pullover is a soft and casual adult-sized pullover sweater featuring flattering elbow-length sleeves. This design was adapted from the popular Picnic Child's Pullover, scaled up for grown-up sizes. The pullover is available in five finished chest measurements: 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, and 56 inches, making it suitable for a wide range of body sizes. The sweater combines simple visual interest through alternating stripes of ribbing and stockinette stitch, creating a classic, wearable garment that is equally enjoyable to knit as it is to wear.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using top-down seamless construction, which offers significant practical advantages for customization. Because the sweater is worked from the top down, knitters can easily modify the lengths of both the sleeves and body to achieve their desired fit before binding off. The entire garment is worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish. This seamless approach reduces finishing work and produces a more comfortable, stretchy garment.

Stitches Used

The Valley Yarns Park Pullover employs fundamental knitting stitches combined into a simple stripe pattern. The primary stitch is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic V-pattern texture characteristic of traditional knitwear. This is alternated with ribbing to create visual stripes throughout the design. The pattern also incorporates knit and purl stitches as the foundation of these stitch patterns. Shaping is achieved through increase stitches including m1L (make 1 left) and m1R (make 1 right), which add stitches by working into the strand running between needles. Decrease stitches such as k2tog (knit 2 together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) are used to shape the garment, particularly at the sleeves. The pattern uses stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping points as you work in the round.

Materials

The Valley Yarns Park Pullover is designed to be knitted with Valley Yarns Goshen yarn, a premium blend fiber containing 48% Peruvian cotton, 46% modal, and 6% silk. This fiber composition creates a soft, breathable fabric ideal for a casual pullover. The pattern requires 8 to 14 skeins depending on size (8 skeins for the 36-inch size up to 14 skeins for the 56-inch size), with each skein weighing 50 grams and containing 92 yards. The recommended color shown is 06 Red. Knitting needles required include US size 7 (4.50mm) circular needles in three lengths—16 inches, 32 inches, and 40 inches—as well as double-pointed needles of the same size, or whatever needle size is needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional materials include four stitch markers and scrap yarn to use as a stitch holder. The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential to verify before beginning the project.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced beginner difficulty, making it appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle seamless, in-the-round construction. While the stitches themselves are fundamental, the combination of working in the round with circular needles and managing multiple stitch markers requires intermediate skills and attention to pattern details.
