Valley Yarns Dagna Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Dagna Pullover is a knitted sweater designed by Kirsten Hipsky that features an ingenious one-piece construction method. Rather than knitting separate pieces and seaming them together, this pullover is worked continuously from the back, up and over the shoulders, down the arms, and finishing at the front. The finished garment is available in seven sizes, ranging from 36" to 60" in chest measurement, making it suitable for a wide range of body types.

Construction Technique

This pullover employs a unique bottom-up, worked-flat construction that simplifies the typical sweater-making process. The knitter begins by casting on stitches for the back panel and works upward to the underarm. At the underarm point, stitches are progressively cast on at the end of each row to create the sleeves, gradually expanding the piece to accommodate the arm width. Once the sleeves reach their full width of 80 stitches each, the work continues straight until the desired sleeve length is achieved. The neck shaping is then worked by binding off the center back neck stitches and working each shoulder separately with a new ball of yarn, allowing for independent shaping of the neckline. Finally, stitches are cast back on at the neck edges to create the front of the pullover, and the two sides are rejoined to complete the garment in one continuous piece.

Stitch Pattern

The Dagna Pullover features a mistake rib stitch pattern, which is described as mostly knit. This stitch pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches plus 1 additional stitch. The pattern is simple and repetitive: knit 3 stitches, purl 1 stitch, repeating this sequence across each row, with 1 knit stitch at the end of the row. This straightforward pattern is ideal for beginner knitters, as it requires only basic knit and purl stitches and creates a subtle textured fabric that is visually interesting without being overly complicated.

Techniques Used

  • Casting on: Initial cast on for the back, plus progressive cast-ons during sleeve shaping and neck shaping
  • Binding off: Used for the back neck opening
  • Increasing via cast-on: Stitches are cast on at row ends to create sleeve width and later to reconstruct the front neckline
  • Working with separate balls of yarn: Two balls are used simultaneously when shaping the neck to work each shoulder independently
  • Joining pieces: The two shoulder sections are rejoined after neck shaping is complete
  • Blocking: The finished piece is blocked to achieve proper gauge and finished dimensions

Materials and Tools

The Dagna Pullover is designed to be knitted with Valley Yarns Haydenville, a yarn blend consisting of 60% Superwash Merino and 40% Acrylic Microfiber. This blend combines the softness and breathability of merino wool with the durability and easy-care properties of acrylic microfiber. The yardage required depends on the finished size: smaller sizes need 5 skeins, while the largest size requires 11 skeins. Each skein contains 220 yards and weighs 100 grams. The pattern shown is knitted in the color Burgundy.

The project requires US size 7 (4.50mm) circular needles in two lengths: a 40-inch needle for working the main body and a 16-inch needle for smaller sections. Circular needles are essential for this construction method, as they accommodate the large number of stitches created during sleeve shaping. The working gauge is approximately 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1 inch in the stitch pattern when slightly stretched and after blocking.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern accommodates chest measurements from 32 inches to 56 inches across seven different size options, with finished chest measurements ranging from 36 inches to 60 inches. This range of sizes ensures that knitters of various body types can find an appropriate fit. The back length is worked to 16 inches or to the desired length before underarm shaping begins, allowing for customization based on individual torso proportions. Sleeve length is also adjustable, with finished sleeve measurements ranging from 7.5 inches to 10.5 inches depending on the size.
