Valley Yarns Woodbridge Scarf/Wrap
What Is Being Made
The Woodbridge Scarf/Wrap is a totally reversible knitted accessory designed by Melissa LaBarre that combines cable and lace stitching for a light and airy layer of warmth. This seamless, worked-flat project offers two finished size options: a wide scarf measuring 13" x 63" or a larger wrap measuring 20" x 63". The reversible design makes it versatile for wearing around the neck or draping as a wrap, perfect for transitional seasons when you need an elegant yet functional layering piece.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its sophisticated appearance:
- Cable work: The pattern features cable crosses that are worked every 16 rows, creating dimensional texture. Two cable techniques are used—C16F (cable 16 front) and C16B (cable 16 back)—where 8 stitches are placed on a cable needle and held while working the next 8 stitches in a knit 2, purl 2 ribbed pattern before working the held stitches.
- Lace stitching: Yarn overs combined with knit 2 together decreases create an open, airy lace section that runs down the center of the piece, contributing to the lightweight quality.
- Bottom-up construction: The scarf is worked from one end to the other, building length as you progress through the pattern repeats.
- Seamless, worked-flat design: Despite using circular needles, the piece is worked back and forth in rows rather than in the round, eliminating the need for seaming while maintaining a flat, rectangular shape.
Stitches Used
The Woodbridge pattern employs a carefully balanced combination of fundamental and decorative stitches:
- Knit and purl stitches: Form the foundation of the ribbed sections (knit 2, purl 2 repeat) that frame the cable and lace pattern areas.
- Cable stitches: C16F and C16B crosses create the dimensional cable texture by crossing groups of 8 stitches over each other while maintaining the ribbed pattern within the cable.
- Yarn overs (yo): Create the decorative openings in the lace section, adding visual interest and reducing weight.
- Knit 2 together (k2tog): Paired with yarn overs to form the lace pattern and maintain stitch count throughout the piece.
Materials
The Woodbridge Scarf/Wrap is designed to be worked in luxury fiber with specific tools to achieve the intended drape and appearance:
- Yarn: Valley Yarns Mount Holyoke in worsted weight, 100% cashmere fiber. The scarf size requires 4 skeins (approximately 740 yards), while the wrap size requires 6 skeins (approximately 1,110 yards). Each skein contains 50 grams and yields 185 yards.
- Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles in 32" length, used for working back and forth in rows rather than in the round.
- Additional tools: Stitch markers to denote pattern sections, a cable needle for executing cable crosses, and a blunt needle for weaving in yarn ends after binding off and blocking.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in the cable and lace pattern. This gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished measurements and the proper balance between the cable texture and lace openness. The scarf version measures 13 inches wide by 63 inches long, while the wrap version measures 20 inches wide by 63 inches long, providing options for different styling preferences and yarn quantities.
