Valley Yarns Peridot Knit Wrap
Garment Overview
The Peridot is a luxuriously textured long wrap designed by Julie Turjoman, perfect for warm weather wear. This intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a sophisticated accessory measuring approximately 16¾" wide by 72" long in one size. The wrap features an elegant combination of stitch patterns that work together harmoniously: an undulating ripple stitch field at the center, complemented by deep scalloped lace borders on both edges. The directional lace borders form mirror images of each other, creating a balanced, professional appearance.
Construction Technique
The Peridot is worked in two separate pieces that are later joined together using the Kitchener stitch grafting method. This two-piece construction allows for the creation of symmetrical directional lace borders. Border #1 is worked first, then Border #2 and the ripple stitch field are worked as a second piece. The live stitches at the end of Border #1 are grafted onto the live stitches at the end of the field piece, joining them seamlessly at the top of one border. This technique ensures that the lace scallop-and-point stitch counts flow evenly and gracefully into the ripple stitch field.
Stitch Patterns and Techniques
The Peridot incorporates two distinct stitch patterns that showcase intermediate knitting skills:
- Ripple Stitch Field: The central portion of the wrap features an undulating ripple stitch that creates visual movement and texture throughout the main body of the wrap.
- Lace Border Stitch: The borders showcase a scallop-and-point lace pattern that creates the characteristic deep, scalloped edges. This lace pattern requires careful attention to yarn overs, decreases, and stitch manipulation to achieve the flowing, graceful appearance.
Both stitch patterns are worked from charts, and the pattern notes emphasize the importance of swatching both stitch patterns separately to verify gauge before beginning the project. The lace borders use standard decreases including K2tog (knit 2 stitches together), P3tog (purl 3 stitches together), Sk2p (slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over), and Skp (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) to shape the scallops and points.
Yarn and Materials
The Peridot pattern calls for Valley Yarns 2/10 Merino Tencel in the Colrain Lace weight. One cone of yarn is required, which contains 1,540 yards and weighs 8.8 ounces. This yarn blend combines 50% Merino Wool with 50% Tencel, creating a luxurious fiber that drapes beautifully and provides breathability ideal for warm weather garments. The recommended colorway is Silver, which complements the delicate lace and ripple stitch patterns.
Needles and Notions
The pattern is worked on US 6 (4mm) needles, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. An extra US 6 needle is required for the Kitchener stitch grafting that joins the two pieces together. Additional materials include stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and assisting with the grafting process.
Gauge
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern, as two different gauges apply to the different stitch patterns used:
- Ripple Stitch Gauge: 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when blocked using US 6 (4mm) needles
- Lace Border Stitch Gauge: 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when blocked using US 6 (4mm) needles
The pattern strongly recommends swatching both stitch patterns to verify gauge before beginning, ensuring that the finished wrap will have the correct finished measurements and proper drape.
Finished Measurements
The completed Peridot wrap measures approximately 16¾ inches in width and 72 inches in length, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping elegantly over the shoulders during warm weather.
