Product Description

Valley Yarns Cumin is a women’s top-down, scoop neck pullover that features an on-trend textured yoke, hem, and sleeves. It’s worked in one piece with minimal finishing, ending at mid-hip, and flatters most figures. Knit in Valley Yarns Haydenville, an extraordinarily soft blend of superwash Merino and acrylic microfiber. Haydenville is a worsted weight yarn with a slight, exquisite sheen that is ideal for cables and colorwork due to the crisp stitch definition it provides. Valley Yarns Cumin Pullover Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Cumin is a top-down, scoop neck pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked in one piece in the round, minimizing finishing work. The sweater features a mid-hip length and is designed to flatter most figures with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease. It is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust measurements from 35¼ inches to 63¼ inches.

Knitting Techniques

This pullover employs several key knitting techniques that define its construction and visual appeal:

  • Top-Down Construction: The sweater is knitted from the neckline downward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and minimal seaming. This method provides flexibility in garment length and fit as you work.
  • Worked in the Round: Using circular needles and double-pointed needles, the entire garment is constructed circularly, creating seamless fabric and reducing finishing requirements to just weaving in ends.
  • Cable Texturing: The design features textured cables on the yoke, hem, and sleeves, adding visual interest and an on-trend aesthetic to the finished sweater.
  • Short-Row Shaping: The pattern includes wrap and turn (W&T) short-row shaping techniques to create custom fit and shaping in specific areas of the garment.
  • Increases and Decreases: Strategic increases using M1L (make 1 left) and decreases such as K2tog (knit 2 together) and S2kp2 (slip 2, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over) are used to shape the yoke and create the textured stitch patterns.

Stitches Used

The Cumin pullover combines fundamental and decorative stitches to create its textured design:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout most of the garment, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric. Gauge is measured in stockinette stitch at 20 stitches and 28 rounds per 4 inches when blocked using US 7 (4.5mm) needles.
  • Cable Stitches: Textured cable patterns appear on the yoke, hem, and sleeves, creating the on-trend visual elements that define this design.
  • Knit and Purl Combinations: Used within the cable and textured sections to create depth and dimension in the fabric.
  • Yarn Overs (Yo): Incorporated into stitch patterns for decorative texture and shaping.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Cumin pullover is designed to showcase the qualities of Valley Yarns Haydenville, a practical and luxurious blend yarn. The yarn requirements range from 6 skeins for smaller sizes (XS, S, and M) to 10 skeins for the largest size (4XL), with each skein containing 100 grams and 220 yards of yardage.

Yarn Fiber Content: Valley Yarns Haydenville is composed of 60% Superwash Merino Wool and 40% Acrylic Microfiber. This blend combines the softness and breathability of merino wool with the durability and easy-care properties of acrylic microfiber, making the finished sweater practical for regular wear and simple to maintain.

Color: The sample shown is knitted in Color 30 Slate Blue, a versatile neutral shade suitable for various styling options.

Needles and Tools Required

Successful completion of the Cumin pullover requires the following needle sizes and additional materials:

  • US 7 (4.5mm) Circular Needles: Available in 16-inch and 32-40 inch lengths, used for the main fabric and worked at the primary gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rounds per 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked.
  • US 7 (4.5mm) Double-Pointed Needles (DPNs): Used for working smaller circumferences, particularly at the sleeves and neckline.
  • US 5 (3.75mm) Circular Needles: Available in 16-inch length, used for ribbed or textured edgings such as
