Valley Yarns Peppercorn Pullover

What is Being Made

The Peppercorn is a long-sleeved pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman. This refined garment features a classic pullover construction and is available in sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust measurements from 33¼ inches to 60 inches. The sweater is designed to fit with 1 to 2 inches of positive ease, making it suitable for layering or a comfortable everyday fit.

Construction Method and Techniques

This sweater is worked from the bottom up in the round, creating a seamless garment with minimal finishing required. The bottom-up, in-the-round construction method allows knitters to try on the piece as they work and provides a continuous, uninterrupted knitting experience.

The Peppercorn features 3-color Fair Isle peerie colorwork in the form of narrow stripes worked against a solid color background. Fair Isle is a traditional stranded colorwork technique that involves carrying unused yarn colors inside the fabric as you knit, creating a reversible, double-thickness textile. Peerie refers to the small, delicate scale of the colorwork pattern. The stripes add visual interest and texture while maintaining the refined aesthetic of the design.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for an intermediate skill level:

  • Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, created by knitting all stitches on right-side rounds and purling on wrong-side rows (or knitting throughout when worked in the round)
  • K1/P1 Ribbing is used for the cuff at the lower edge, providing elasticity and a finished appearance that hugs the wrist
  • Stranded colorwork techniques are used to incorporate the Fair Isle peerie stripes, requiring knitters to manage multiple yarn colors simultaneously
  • Increases and decreases shape the sweater body and sleeves to create proper fit and silhouette

Yarn and Materials

The Peppercorn is designed to be knitted in Valley Yarns Worthington, a premium blend yarn composed of 50% Wool, 25% Alpaca, and 25% Viscose. Each skein contains 50 grams and yields 174 yards. The tweedy texture of Worthington contributes to the refined appearance of the finished sweater.

The color palette consists of four coordinated shades of Valley Yarns Worthington:

  • Main Color (MC): 01 Oatmeal, requiring 5 to 10 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color 1 (CC1): 15 Rhododendron, requiring 1 skein
  • Contrast Color 2 (CC2): 12 Evergreen, requiring 1 to 2 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color 3 (CC3): 11 Moss, requiring 2 to 3 skeins depending on size

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in lengths of 32 to 40 inches, along with matching double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the sleeves in the round. A US 3 (3.25mm) circular needle in 16-inch and 32-40 inch lengths, plus matching DPNs, is used for the ribbed cuff.

Additional materials include stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and any necessary seaming.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 28 rounds equal to 4 inches in stockinette stitch, knitted in the round on the larger needles and measured after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit and is particularly important in a stranded colorwork project, as the Fair Isle technique can affect fabric density and drape.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Peppercorn is suitable for knitters with foundational experience. The intermediate difficulty reflects the combination of bottom-up seamless construction, in-
