Product Description

We're so excited to share I Feel Vine by Fiona Ellis - the first pattern in our Valley Yarns Designer in Residence series! I Feel Vine is a long-line cardigan that's worked in Valley Yarns Amherst. It's perfect for all seasons - cozy for the chilly months but also great to slip on over a sleeveless top in warmer months to fend off the chill of air conditioning. Its clever use of stitch patterning utilizes the elasticity of ribbing at the waist and cuff to give gentle shaping. The rib then morphs into a unique leaf pattern and finally into eyelet lace stitch-work which adds to the overall femininity of this cardigan. The cable patterns are charted and written out.

Valley Yarns WEBS I Feel Vine Cardigan by Fiona Ellis

What Is Being Made

The I Feel Vine is a long-line cardigan designed by Fiona Ellis as part of the Designer in Residence Series. This versatile garment is constructed to work across all seasons—cozy enough for chilly months while remaining light enough to layer over sleeveless tops during warmer weather. The cardigan features a sophisticated stitch progression that moves from structured ribbing at the waist and cuff into an intricate leaf pattern, culminating in delicate eyelet lace stitch-work. The design emphasizes gentle shaping through the strategic use of ribbing elasticity, creating a flattering silhouette. Available in seven sizes ranging from 34" to 53" finished bust measurement, this piece offers inclusive sizing options for various body types.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs multiple construction techniques to achieve its refined aesthetic. The cardigan is worked flat on circular needles, meaning pieces are knitted back and forth rather than in the round, allowing for easier stitch manipulation and shaping. The garment is constructed bottom-up, beginning at the lower edge and progressing toward the shoulders and neckline. Individual pieces are seamed together after completion, creating clean, professional-looking joins. The stitch patterning demonstrates advanced technique work, incorporating lace elements through eyelet construction and cables as part of the leaf motif charting.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used for the main body sections, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Seed Stitch: Used for the initial cast-on edge, providing a textured, non-curling foundation
  • Ribbing (k2, p2): Applied at the waist and cuffs to create elastic shaping and definition
  • Leaf Pattern: Worked from Chart A, this stitch pattern creates the distinctive botanical motif that gives the cardigan its name and visual interest
  • Eyelet Lace Stitch-work: Incorporated through yarn-overs (yo) paired with decreases (ssk and k2tog) to create openwork details that add femininity and breathability

Materials and Specifications

This cardigan requires Valley Yarns Amherst, a worsted-weight yarn composed of 100% Merino Wool, with each skein weighing 50 grams and yielding 109 yards. Yarn quantities vary by size: 11 skeins for the smallest size (34"), increasing to 18 skeins for the largest size (53"). The project calls for US Size 7 (4.50mm) and US Size 6 (4.00mm) circular needles, or whatever needle size is required to achieve the specified gauge. Additional materials include six buttons for the front closure. The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches when working stockinette stitch with the larger needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
