Valley Yarns WEBS Emerging Designer Got You Covered Socks

What Is Being Made

Got You Covered Socks are a pair of fitted cuff-down socks designed by Marcy Vandale as part of the WEBS Emerging Designer Series. These socks feature decorative cabling and lace elements that cascade down the leg and foot, creating an elegant design suitable as a personal gift. The finished measurements are available in two sizes: 8 inches and 9 inches around the calf.

Techniques Used

This advanced beginner knitting project employs several intermediate techniques that work together to create visual interest and a custom fit:

  • Seamless construction worked in the round: The socks are knitted continuously using double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, comfortable garment.
  • Picot edging: The cuff begins with a decorative picot edge, which is a traditional technique that creates a delicate, finished appearance at the sock opening.
  • Slip stitch cuff: A simple slip stitch pattern is used in the cuff and repeated on the heel to provide elasticity and ensure the socks stay securely in place during wear.
  • Cable and lace patterns: The leg and foot feature coordinating cable twists and lace motifs that create depth and visual complexity while remaining manageable for advanced beginners.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates a variety of fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • Knit and purl stitches for the foundational stockinette and ribbed sections
  • Yarn overs to create the lace openings
  • Decreases including knit 2 together (k2tog), purl 2 together (p2tog), slip-slip-knit (ssk), and pass slipped stitch over (psso) to shape the foot and manage stitch counts
  • Cable stitches in multiple variations: 1/1 Left Cross (LC), 1/1 Right Cross (RC), 1/1 Left Purl Cross (LPC), 1/1 Right Purl Cross (RPC), and 1/1/1 Left Purl Cross for textured twists throughout the design
  • Slip stitches for both decorative and structural purposes
  • Knit front and back (kfb) increases to add stitches where needed in the pattern

Materials

The pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended fit and drape:

  • Yarn: 2 skeins of Valley Yarns Huntington, a blend of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon. Each skein contains 50 grams and 218 yards, providing approximately 436 total yards for the completed pair. The recommended colorway shown in the pattern is color 23 Sea Gull, a neutral tone suitable for versatile styling.
  • Needles: US size 1 (2.25mm) double-pointed needles or the size required to achieve proper gauge. Double-pointed needles allow for seamless knitting in the round.
  • Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the socks to fit correctly, as the designer notes that the ribbing and lace patterns expand significantly during wear despite appearing small on the needles.

Pattern Notes

The designer emphasizes that although the Got You Covered Socks pattern appears visually complex with its combination of cables and lace, the construction works up effortlessly once you understand the stitch sequences. The fitted design benefits from the elasticity provided by the ribbed sections and the yarn blend, which includes nylon for durability and recovery. A set-up round is worked at the beginning of the leg to add an extra stitch in the center of the pattern, and the pattern uses chart panels and markers to keep track of the repeating motifs across the instep and foot.
