How to Read a Knitting PDF
If you've only ever knit from a video, a written pattern can look like another language. Three things get you most of the way:
- Abbreviations. k = knit, p = purl, k2tog = knit two together, ssk = slip slip knit, yo = yarn over, pm = place marker. Every pattern lists its own abbreviations near the top — read that box first.
- Gauge. The line that says something like "20 sts and 26 rows = 4 inches." Knit a swatch and check it. If your swatch is bigger than the pattern's, go down a needle size; smaller, go up. This is the single step that decides whether a sweater fits.
- Repeats. Anything inside * … * or [ … ] gets repeated across the row. The number after tells you how many times.
- Printing tip: print at 100% scale, not "fit to page" — charts and schematics are drawn to size, and scaling them distorts the stitch counts.
Whenever you are starting a new-to-you design, always take the time to read through the entire pattern before you cast on! This allows you to identify any abbreviations or techniques you may not be familiar with, and it can often provide valuable context for instructions that would otherwise be confusing without a clear understanding of what comes next.
