The Valley Yarns Rustic Farmhouse Towels are a weaving project designed by Paula Veleta that produces two finished dish towels measuring 15.5" x 30" each. This downloadable PDF pattern combines Swedish lace inspiration with rustic farmhouse aesthetics, featuring a sophisticated color palette of off-white, blue, and burnt sienna that evokes French country style.
This pattern creates a pair of functional dish towels suitable for kitchen use. The finished towels showcase decorative lace patterning combined with striped color work, making them both practical and visually appealing home textiles. Each towel is woven as a single piece on the loom before finishing.
The Rustic Farmhouse Towels employ several advanced weaving techniques:
This project utilizes a 4-shaft loom configuration, which allows for the complex interlacing required by Swedish lace patterning. The weaving structure is created through a specific threading diagram and treadling sequence that manipulates the four shafts to form the lace openwork. The pattern includes detailed heddle counts for each shaft (Shaft 1: 143 heddles, Shaft 2: 30 heddles, Shaft 3: 36 heddles, Shaft 4: 149 heddles) to ensure proper thread distribution and pattern alignment.
The pattern calls for Valley Yarns 8/2 Cotton, a 100% unmercerized cotton yarn with a yardage of 3360 yards per pound. This weight and fiber content provide the ideal drape and durability for dish towels.

Weft Yarns Required:
The project requires a 4-shaft loom with a minimum width of 20 inches to accommodate the full design. Additional equipment includes one shuttle and three bobbins for managing the multiple yarn colors during weaving. The warp is set at 20 epi (ends per inch), achieved using either a 10-dent reed with a 2/dent threading or a 12-dent reed with a 1-2-2 threading pattern. The total warp length is 3 yards with 358 ends, creating a finished width in the reed of 17.7 inches.
The Rustic Farmhouse Towels feature a carefully curated French country color palette combining Alabaster (off-white), Blue, Heather, and Burnt Sienna tones. This combination creates a warm, inviting aesthetic that complements traditional and farmhouse-style kitchens while maintaining the visual interest of the Swedish lace technique.
