Valley Yarns Towels and Table Toppers eBook

Weaving Projects for Your Home is a downloadable PDF collection of homeware designs created by Valley Yarns. This eBook features multiple towel and table topper projects designed for weavers using shaft looms, combining traditional weaving techniques with contemporary color work to create functional and decorative pieces for the home.

Regal Twill Dish Towel

What is Being Made: The Regal Twill Dish Towel is a functional kitchen textile project that produces two finished towels measuring 16" x 30" each. This design, created by designer Paula Veleta, showcases the Gothic Cross pattern—a traditional twill motif known for its delicate, appealing shape when executed as a color and weave project.

Techniques Used: This project employs twill weaving and color and weave techniques. The Gothic Cross pattern is woven using color blocking strategies, where the interplay of three distinct yarn colors creates visual interest and pattern definition. Asymmetric color bands run the length of the towel, adding a contemporary design element to the traditional twill structure. The weaver alternates blocks of treadling to achieve the color and weave effects throughout the piece.

Stitches and Weave Structure: This towel is constructed using a 4-shaft loom configuration, which allows for the complex twill patterning required for the Gothic Cross design. The threading follows a specific shaft arrangement with heddle counts distributed across four shafts: Shaft 1 (135 heddles), Shaft 2 (90 heddles), Shaft 3 (136 heddles), and Shaft 4 (181 heddles). The warp is threaded following a detailed threading chart with a 22-repeat pattern, and floating selvedges are incorporated on both edges for finished selvage treatment.

Materials and Specifications: The Regal Twill Dish Towel is woven using Valley Yarn 10/2 Cotton, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn available in three colorways: Eggplant (#6256), Daffodil (#1325), and Algiers Blue (#2194). The total yardage required is 1773 yards of Eggplant, 843 yards of Daffodil, and 267 yards of Algiers Blue. The warp is set at 30 ends per inch (epi), achieved using either a 10-dent reed with 3 dents per repeat or a 12-dent reed with 2-3 dents per repeat. The loom must be at least 20" wide, with a reed width of 18". Additional equipment includes 2 shuttles and 3 bobbins for managing the multiple yarn colors during weaving. The warp length is 3 yards with 544 total ends, including two floating selvedges.

Additional Projects

The eBook includes additional homeware weaving projects: Festive Summer & Winter Towel, Anniversary Placemats, Summer Elegance Runner, and Four Corners Placemats. Each project applies similar weaving principles using shaft loom techniques and Valley Yarns cotton materials to create coordinated home textiles.

About Weaving Techniques: Shaft loom weaving allows weavers to create complex patterns by raising and lowering multiple sets of warp threads in coordinated sequences. The color and weave technique used in these projects creates pattern and visual texture through the strategic placement of different yarn colors in both warp and weft directions, rather than relying solely on thread interlacement structures. This approach is particularly effective for creating geometric patterns like the Gothic Cross, where color placement enhances the underlying twill structure.
