I bought one of these a few years ago thinking it was a self-indulgent little treat...and boy, was I wrong!

Winding yarn into cakes lets me organize my stash and workbag (DeWalt and Husky gator bags) better. The center-pull yarn cakes treat the yarn nicely by giving them structure (I wind a band of old-fashioned adding-machine paper tape around each cake, with the yarn label taped on). It saves my working hands and wrists from the painful repetitive motions of winding. It goes really fast! The cakes are much less prone to "yarn barf." And it makes the continual pulling out of lengths of yarn in use much easier and smoother. I normally park my in-process yarn cakes in a small metal mixing bowl or various plastic bins.

Also I live with a house chicken, and while normally demure, she turns into SoccerSaurus when a rolling/in-use yarn ball is visible. The yarn cake format doesn't seem to intrigue her as much, so she settles for kicking finished unmated socks around the room.

I used to be frustrated by the size limit of about 100 g (which you can extend a bit if you work carefully and gently nudge the guide-loop wire outward while controlling the angle the yarn feeds onto the spool). Over time I've gotten used to it.

Best of all, winding my stash into yarn cakes has, ahem, let me buy more yarn. You can take that as a cautionary observation. Neatly wrapped yarn cakes take up much less space than the various balls and skeins. I have a rule that I cannot buy more yarn unless there is space in my existing storage system.

One last thing, I use this tool to wind yarn cakes from skeins directly off the yarn swift I hacked from an IKEA tabletop lazy susan. It might also work with the other sorts of swifts as well.

Good for small balls

This works great as long as you don't want more than a 4oz ball. It is pretty useless to wind any larger hanks or skeins.

Comments about "" Ball Winder:

I purchased to be able to wind yarn at home when I needed since I've read that it is better to store the yarn in hanks than wound. Most stores will wind 1 or 2 hanks when they're not too busy, but being able to do this at home just makes sense. I hesitated for a long time because most reviews are good but the not so good ones always made me nervous. But the not so good reviews would have been great if they had just learned the trick! The metal tension bar WILL stay upright and in the correct position if you just pull it out (slowly) a little bit! It was obviously meant to work that way but w/o directions it's not intuitive. Many reviewers complained about this, even the good one, and folks are holding the bar.. after a few cakes in I asked my husband to look at it.. maybe he could find something to secure the bar.. and he slowly pulled it out... VIOLA! I wound another cake after that WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS! :-) Husbands can be so helpful sometimes!! ;-)

I love this ball winder. It pulls the yarn through smoothly and makes great balls that work as either center pulls or outside pulls. So far I have wound everything from lace weight to heavy worsted weight yarns and each time I've been able to fit the whole skein on the winder. I highly recommend this item.

A friend got into real trouble by winding at great speed. Not a Royal. Had to throw out a $20.00 ball of yarn that became hopelessly entangled. So, I am very careful and deliberate with my winder. It is great I love it.

              Comments about "" Ball Winder:

My wife has been delighted to use her new yarn baller along with a Swedish umbrella swift. She made short work of balling several skeins of yarn that have lain around for several weeks/months. It took a little more effort to set up an arrangement for fitting the swift and baller on a table and flat stool, but then things went well after that. She is very pleased and, while I am not the knitter in the family, I'm impressed with the neat and compact balls of yarn that resulted.

I've considered a ball winder for years, but I finally bought this one after doing tons of research. I can now easily create compact, center-pull skeins with anything from cheap acrylic yarn to fancy luxurious hanks of wool. No more tangles, no more sad looking leftover piles of yarn.

I use this several times a week and I have no complaints. It's a great purchase.
