Fingering Weight Yarn

What is fingering weight yarn? It's a fine yarn (weight category 1, called 4 ply in the UK and Australia) that knits at about 7–8 stitches per inch on US 1–3 needles. It's the go-to weight for socks, shawls, light garments and detailed lace or colorwork.

Choosing and Using Fingering Weight Yarn

Fingering weight yarn sits between lace and sport weight. It gives crisp stitch definition and drape without bulk, which is why it's used for socks, shawls and lightweight sweaters.

What Is Fingering Weight Yarn?

Fingering is the US name for a fine yarn in the Craft Yarn Council's weight category 1. In the UK and Australia the same weight is called 4 ply. Typical gauge is 27–32 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette on 2.25–3.25 mm (US 1–3) needles; crocheters usually use a 2.25–3.5 mm hook.

Wool and Wool-Blend Fingering Yarn

Wool is elastic, warm and easy to block, which makes it the classic choice for shawls and fitted garments. Valley Yarns Huntington and Cascade 220 Fingering are dependable everyday bases, and Malabrigo Sock is a favorite for hand-dyed color.

Cotton and Acrylic Fingering Weight Yarn
