Valley Yarns Counties Collection Ebook

The Valley Yarns Counties Collection Ebook is an intermediate-level knitting resource featuring six distinct cardigan designs inspired by English counties. This downloadable PDF pattern collection offers versatile layering pieces suitable for transitional weather, each with its own construction details and design features.

#1133 Bedford Cardigan

The Bedford is a sophisticated cardigan coat designed by Julie Turjoman for intermediate knitters seeking a practical layering piece for mild fall weather. This design bridges the gap between a light windbreaker and a heavy down jacket, featuring a high collar, flattering A-line shaping, and functional pockets for everyday wear.

Construction and Techniques: The Bedford cardigan is worked back and forth in rows from the ribbed hem through the armholes, incorporating A-line shaping for a flattering silhouette. At the armholes, the piece is divided to work the back and fronts separately. Sleeves are then worked down in the round from the armholes, and collar stitches are picked up along the bound-off neck edges and worked back and forth in rows. Button bands are integrated with the body during construction. Optional patch pockets are worked separately and seamed to the fronts during finishing.

Stitches Used: The primary stitch pattern is stockinette stitch, worked at a gauge of 16 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches on US size 9 needles when blocked. Ribbing is used at the hem for structure and recovery.

Sizing and Finished Measurements: Available in sizes XS through 5XL, the Bedford offers a range of bust measurements from 34 inches (XS) to 66 inches (5XL), with corresponding hip measurements from 36 to 68 inches. The cardigan is designed with 4 to 6 inches of positive ease and hits at mid-thigh length.

Materials: The Bedford requires 7 to 13 balls of Valley Yarns Becket yarn depending on size, a luxurious blend of 50% superfine alpaca and 50% wool, with each ball containing 100 grams and 141 yards. The sample shown is knit in the Deep Woods colorway. Needles required include US size 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles in 12–24" and 24–40" lengths, along with US size 8 (5.0 mm) circular needles in the same lengths for ribbing. Additional materials include stitch markers (including 2 in a unique color for pattern tracking), a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, 9 buttons at ¾" diameter, and a sewing needle with matching thread for button attachment.
