Cascade Yarns DK Marilee Knitted Cardigan Sweater
What is Being Made
The DK576 is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan sweater designed by Tamara Moots. This versatile piece is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, with finished chest measurements from 33 inches (84 cm) to 52 inches (132 cm) and lengths from 22 to 25 inches (56 to 63.5 cm). The cardigan is crafted using Cascade Yarns Pacific Sport yarn, a blend of 60% acrylic and 40% superwash merino, making it a practical and easy-care garment suitable for various climates and occasions.
Techniques Used
This cardigan pattern incorporates multiple advanced knitting techniques that make it an excellent project for intermediate-level knitters. The garment is constructed using a top-down seamless construction method, which allows knitters to try on the piece as they work and make adjustments as needed. The pattern employs both worked-in-the-round and worked-flat techniques, providing flexibility in how sections are executed. Cable stitching is featured prominently in the design, adding visual interest and texture to the finished piece. The seamless construction eliminates the need for finishing seams, resulting in a polished, professional appearance and improved comfort against the skin.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes a foundation of stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) using the larger needles. Beyond basic knit and purl stitches, the design incorporates several specialized techniques:
- Left Twist (LT): A decorative stitch created by knitting into the back of the second stitch without dropping it, then knitting the first stitch normally, before slipping both stitches off the needle together
- 2/1 Left Purl Cable (2/1 LPC): Slip 2 stitches to a double-pointed needle and hold in front, purl 1 stitch, then knit 2 stitches from the cable needle
- 2/1 Right Purl Cable (2/1 RPC): Slip 1 stitch to a double-pointed needle and hold in back, knit 1 stitch, then purl 1 stitch from the cable needle
- Increase techniques: M1R (make one right) and M1L (make one left) increases for shaping, along with K1f&b (knit into front and back) increases
- Decrease techniques: SSK (slip, slip, knit) decreases for structured shaping
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires Cascade Yarns Pacific Sport yarn in color #141 (Blue Ice). The yardage needed varies by size, requiring between 4 and 7 skeins, with each skein containing 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and 273 yards (250 meters). Knitters will need two sets of US knitting needles: US 5-6 (3.75-4.0 mm) needles for the main body to achieve the specified gauge, and US 4-5 (3.5-3.75 mm) needles (one size smaller) for the edging. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scrap yarn for stitch holders, and four stitch markers, with one distinctive marker to denote the beginning of rounds when working in the round.
