Debbie Bliss Graduated Yoke Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Graduated Yoke Sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed to fit chest measurements ranging from 77–142cm (30–56 inches). This sweater features a distinctive graduated yoke construction, a design technique where the yoke section increases in width gradually from the neckline downward. The finished garment offers length options from 63–75cm (24¾–29½ inches), with consistent sleeve length of 45cm (17¾ inches) across all sizes, making it a versatile piece suitable for various body proportions.

Techniques Used

This advanced-level knitting project employs several sophisticated construction methods. The sweater is worked flat, meaning pieces are knitted in separate flat panels rather than in the round, and then seamed together to create the finished garment. The graduated yoke technique is a hallmark feature, allowing for elegant shaping at the shoulders and upper chest area. Cable work is integrated throughout the design, adding visual texture and structural interest to the piece.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates multiple stitch techniques to create its distinctive appearance. Stocking stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic knit surface. Cable stitches are worked using specialized abbreviations including C4B (cable 4 back), C4F (cable 4 front), C5B (cable 5 back), T3R (twist 3 right), and T3L (twist 3 left). These cable and twist stitches create raised, braided textures across the garment. The pattern also employs increase stitches (m1 and m1p) to shape the graduated yoke section smoothly and evenly.

Materials and Gauge

The Debbie Bliss Graduated Yoke Sweater is knitted using Debbie Bliss British Wool Aran yarn in Cream 01, a worsted-weight yarn. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 14–22 balls of 50g (1¾oz) per ball. The project requires two pairs of knitting needles: 4mm (US 6) needles and 5mm (US 8) needles, plus a cable needle for managing cable stitches. Gauge is critical for this pattern: 18 stitches and 24 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch using 5mm needles, and 26 stitches and 24 rows over 10cm in cable panel A using 5mm needles. Achieving proper gauge ensures the finished measurements will be accurate.
