  • Yarn: heavy worsted weight yarn with a gauge of 4 stitches/ inch. Recommended yarn is Valley Yarns Becket, approx. 250 yards.
  • Needles:  One 16 inch circular needle size 8 or 9, or size that gives you a gauge of 4 sts/inch in the round in stockinette stitch
  • Optional: a ping pong ball for optional “tassel”
  • Knit and Crochet Tool Kit
  • For the Mittens: Knitter’s Almanac by Elizabeth Zimmermann (15% discount).
  • Yarn: Heavy worsted weight yarn that says it will create a gauge of 4 stitches/inch in  stockinette st, approx. 225 yards total. Recommended yarn is Valley Yarns Becket (2 balls). You may use a second color for thumb, cuff, or stripes.
  • Needles: One set of 5 dpns sizes 7 or 8, using either size to give you a gauge of 4.5–5 sts per inch in the round in stockinette st. This gauge is tighter than the yarn wrapper gauge on purpose for a denser mitten, intended to give you a mitten with 7.5–8 inch circumference.  You may use dpns that are one size smaller for a slightly smaller and denser mitten.
  • 2 single dpns  or knitting needles in a much smaller size for picking up stitches.
  • Knit and Crochet Tool Kit

  1. For mittens: Please make a stockinette swatch in the round  using suggested needles size 8, or the size that will give you the correct gauge of 4.5 - 5 stiches per inch when folded flat. This will lend a mitten circumference of approx. 7.5 - 8 inches. If you want a slightly smaller size mitten, use dpns one size smaller than your gauge needle. Make your swatch at least 3 inches tall.

  2. For the hat: If you are using the same yarn you can use needles one or two sizes larger to make a swatch in the round to get a gauge of 4sts per inch in stockinette stitch. Again, make your swatch at least 3 inches tall. If you are using different yarn, try using the recommended needles on the yarn wrapper, and adjust to get your correct gauge of 4 sts per inch. If you are new to swatching in the round please look at our tutorial HERE
