Lana Grossa Shawl in Ecopuno Dégradé
What is Being Made
This is a seamless triangular shawl measuring 123 x 167 cm, designed to be worked flat from a cast-on edge using increases that shape the piece into a classic shawl silhouette. The design showcases beautiful color transitions through strategic yarn changes, creating a sophisticated striped effect across the finished garment.
Techniques Used
The shawl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its final form:
- Seamless construction: The entire piece is worked as one continuous section without seams, eliminating the need for finishing joins
- Flat working method: Rather than working in the round, the shawl is knitted back and forth on circular needles, allowing for easy color changes at row beginnings
- Strategic increases: Increases are worked at the right edge of the piece as charted, with yarn overs on wrong-side rows followed by knit-through-back-loop stitches on right-side rows to create decorative shaping
- Stripe pattern: Color changes are introduced at the beginning of rows, allowing three distinct color variations to be used sequentially until each is exhausted
- Selvage stitch technique: Edge stitches are worked through the back loop on right-side rows and purled through the back loop on wrong-side rows, with the final stitch slipped to create neat, finished edges
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental stockinette stitch as its primary construction method, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for displaying the color gradations. Specific stitch techniques include:
- Stockinette stitch (St st): Knit stitches on right-side rows and purl stitches on wrong-side rows form the main fabric
- Yarn overs (yo): Worked on wrong-side rows at the edge to create the increase points
- Knit through back loop (ktbl): Used to work into the yarn overs on right-side rows, creating a twisted stitch that adds visual interest
- Selvage stitches: Knit through back loop on right-side rows and purled through back loop on wrong-side rows to frame the edges
- Slip stitches: The final stitch of each row is slipped purlwise to maintain a neat edge
Materials and Gauge
This shawl is designed to be worked with Lana Grossa Ecopuno Dégradé yarn, a premium blend consisting of 72% cotton, 17% Merino wool, and 11% baby alpaca. The yarn provides 430 meters per 100 grams, offering excellent yardage for this large accessory piece.
Three color variations are used in this design:
- Color 405: Pale Green/Vanilla/Light Grey
- Color 404: Yellow/Light Grey
- Color 406: Grey Brown/Grey Beige
The pattern calls for 100 grams of each color, allowing you to work through all three colorways sequentially. Construction requires size 4 mm (US 6) circular needles measuring 80 cm in length. The recommended gauge is 25 stitches and 32 rows over 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch using the specified needle size. Creating a gauge swatch before beginning is essential to ensure proper finished dimensions and fabric drape.
Finishing
After completing all increases and color changes, the shawl should be pinned to the specified measurements and blocked to even out the fabric and set the stitches. This blocking process ensures the shawl reaches its intended dimensions and displays the stripe pattern evenly across the finished piece.
