Sesia Kinsey Tank

What is Being Made

The Kinsey Tank is a sleeveless knitted garment designed by Lidia Karabinech for intermediate knitters. This tank top features a classic fitted silhouette with a bust measurement range from 35 inches (Small) to 53½ inches (3XL), and a finished length of 24¾ inches. The design is intended to be worn with 1–3 inches of positive ease for comfortable everyday wear.

Techniques Used

The Kinsey Tank employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning the garment is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the shoulders. The pattern uses seamed construction, with separate pieces worked flat on straight needles that are later joined together. Additionally, worked in the round elements are incorporated, as evidenced by the inclusion of a 16-inch circular needle in the materials list. This mixed approach allows for efficient shaping while maintaining clean finishing details.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates the smooth, classic fabric that forms the main body of the tank. The pattern also features 1x1 Ribbing, which is worked over the side edges and at the cast-on edge to create structure and a finished appearance. Ribbing is worked by alternating knit and purl stitches in a single-stitch repeat.

The pattern includes specialized decrease stitches for shaping:

  • K2tog (Knit 2 Together) – a right-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one
  • SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) – a left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches individually, returning them to the left needle in turned position, and knitting them together through the back loops
  • LCD (Left Cable Decrease) – an advanced decrease worked using a cable needle, slipping one stitch to the cable needle and holding it in front, then knitting one stitch, slip-slip-knitting with the cable needle stitch
  • RCD (Right Cable Decrease) – a cable-based decrease with two stitches slipped to a cable needle and held to the back, followed by knit-2-together and a knit stitch from the cable needle

Materials and Gauge

The Kinsey Tank is knitted using Sesia BATIK yarn, a premium blend of 98% organic cotton and 2% iridescent polyamide/polyester. This fiber content creates a breathable, lightweight fabric ideal for a sleeveless summer garment. The yarn comes in 1.75-ounce (50-gram) balls with 147 yards (135 meters) per ball. Yardage requirements range from 6 balls for the Small size to 10 balls for the 3XL size.

The pattern calls for US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles, including both straight needles for flat work and a 16-inch circular needle for in-the-round sections. A cable needle is also required for working the cable decreases. The recommended gauge is 17 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Stockinette Stitch when blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.

Additional notions include stitch holders for managing stitches during construction and a yarn needle for seaming pieces together and weaving in ends. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF from Tahki Stacy Charles, the distributor for Sesia yarns.
