Valley Yarns Favorite Five Dish Towel eBook

Project Overview: The Valley Yarns Favorite Five Dish Towel eBook is a downloadable weaving pattern collection containing five distinct dish towel designs. This comprehensive guide provides weaving drafts and instructions for creating functional kitchen textiles using traditional weaving techniques. Each design showcases different weaving structures and approaches to pattern creation, making this collection suitable for weavers seeking to expand their technical skills while producing practical homeware items.

Crepe Towel

Design Concept: The Crepe Towel, designed by Carol Birtwistle (Draft #89), is based on crepe weave structures. According to weaving theory, crepes are characterized by warp and filling interlaced to create a mixed or uniformly mottled appearance across the cloth surface. This design uses a straight draw threading that is rearranged to produce irregular threadings, with repeating and alternating variations generating vertical stripes throughout the finished towel.

Weaving Technique: This project employs a straightforward technical approach using a 3/2/1/2 tie-up with a straight treadling order, requiring only one shuttle for the entire weaving process. The crepe structure produces a fabric with a soft hand and subtle visual texture.

Equipment Requirements: An 8-shaft loom with a minimum weaving width of 22 inches is necessary. One shuttle is required, and a temple is recommended but optional.

Materials and Specifications:

  • Warp Yarn: Valley Yarns 6/2 unmercerizied Cotton (100% cotton, 2520 yards per pound) in White (633 yards), Red (525 yards), and Orange (210 yards)
  • Weft Yarn: Valley Yarns 6/2 unmercerizied Cotton in White (984 yards)
  • Warp Length: 3 yards of 456 ends (produces 2 towels)
  • Sett: 22 ends per inch (threaded 2-3-3 in an 8-dent reed)
  • Width in Reed: 20.7 inches

Waffle Buddies Towels

The Waffle Buddies Towels design utilizes waffle weave structure, a technique that creates a textured, three-dimensional surface characteristic of traditional waffle cloth. This weave structure is particularly effective for dish towels, as it enhances absorbency and provides visual interest through dimensional patterning.

Modified Starwork Towel

The Modified Starwork Towel features a variation of starwork weave structure. Starwork patterns are geometric designs created through specific threading and treadling sequences that produce star-like or radiating motifs across the fabric surface. The modified version in this collection adapts the traditional starwork structure for dish towel dimensions and functionality.

Summer Garden Towel

The Summer Garden Towel design incorporates pattern elements inspired by garden themes, likely achieved through color variations and weaving structure combinations that evoke natural, botanical imagery suitable for kitchen textiles.

Ribbon Towel

The Ribbon Towel design creates ribbon-like visual effects through the weaving structure and color placement, producing linear pattern elements that run across the towel surface.

General Information: All designs in the Valley Yarns Favorite Five Dish Towel eBook use 6/2 unmercerizied cotton yarn, a traditional choice for kitchen textiles due to its durability, absorbency, and soft hand. The stripe technique appears prominently across the collection, with various weaving structures creating different visual and textural effects. These patterns are designed for personal use and are distributed by WEBS as part of the Valley Yarns collection.
