Woolen Spinning Workshop - ()

Woolen Spinning Workshop

What are people talking about when discussing woolen and worsted yarns?  In this class, we’ll discuss the woolen end of the spinning spectrum. Woolen yarns are light, soft, spongy, fuzzy, and warm!  We will look at best fibers and preparations for spinning woolen yarns and practice the spinning techniques to get a soft, lofty single.  In this discussion, I’ll define the commonly available commercial fiber preparations and preparations we can make ourselves, and discuss the spinning techniques best suited to each.  Before begin spinning, we’ll make rolags on hand cards, and practice hand carding techniques. We’ll also look carefully at the difference between roving and combed top, and practice techniques to work on the woolen end of the spectrum with both of these common fiber preparations.  We’ll talk a lot about role of twist and how we use twist to build the yarn structure of a good woolen yarn. We’ll end with plying our newly spun woolen yarns and discuss yarn finishing techniques to maximize the qualities of our woolen yarns. Finally, we’ll discuss the best projects to highlight the qualities of woolen yarns.  This class is for advanced beginning wheel spinners—you should be able to spin a continuous single and understand the basics of your spinning wheel.
