A cute baby polar bear toy knit without seams on double pointed needles. Otto was designed to be round and cuddly but still easy for little hands to grasp. He knits up quickly and the size can be varied by changing the weight of yarn used. Otto would make a wonderful gift for any kid, or adult.
Yarn: 210m / 230 yards worsted weight yarn or 150m / 165 yards double knitting weight yarn. I used Debbie Bliss Rialto DK in shade 02 for the smaller version and Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Cotton in Bone for the larger version.
Small amount of darker yarn for embroidering eyes and nose, for a toy that won’t be played with by babies or young children you could use toy safety eyes.
Needles: Set of 5 3mm double pointed needles for smaller bear knit with DK weight yarn or 4mm needles for larger bear knit with worsted weight yarn.
Other Materials: Tapestry needle, Polyester or wool toy stuffing.
Gauge: 26 sts and 36 rounds = 10 cm / 4” in stocking stitch for smaller version.
20 sts and 24 rounds = 10 cm / 4” in stocking stitch for larger version.
Because size is not crucial to this project the gauge does not need to be matched exactly and the overall size can be changed by changing the yarn weight and needle size. The most important thing is to work Otto at a relatively tight gauge to create a firm fabric without holes that the stuffing can poke through. If you are using a different yarn weight you should use needles to achieve a tighter than recommended gauge.
Size: The small Otto is approximately 30cm / 12” tall and the larger Otto is approximately 53cm / 21” tall.
