Valley Yarns Pucker Up Scarf: Deflected Double Weave Lace Scarf
What Is Being Made
The Pucker Up Scarf is a woven scarf designed by Elisabeth Hill that uses a deflected double weave structure to create a dynamic visual effect. This scarf is distinguished by its ability to produce "kisses and hugs" patterns through the weaving technique, with secret circles of texture that emerge after the finished scarf is washed. The finished scarf measures approximately 12.5 inches wide in the reed with a warp length of 4 yards, creating a substantial accessory piece suitable for everyday wear.
Weaving Techniques
Deflected Double Weave is the primary technique used in this pattern. This advanced weaving structure creates dimensional effects by deflecting yarn paths in multiple layers, producing the characteristic "kisses and hugs" visual motifs. The deflected double weave variation used here requires careful planning and execution to achieve the intended pattern emergence.
Lace weaving elements are incorporated through the strategic color placement and yarn deflection, creating open areas and visual interest within the fabric structure. The combination of deflected double weave with lace principles produces a scarf that is both textured and visually intricate.
Stripe patterns are created through the deliberate color sequencing in both warp and weft yarns, with three distinct colors working together to enhance the dimensional quality of the deflected double weave structure.
Stitches and Weaving Stitches Used
This pattern employs traditional weaving stitches rather than knit or crochet stitches. The primary weaving structure is based on an 8-shaft loom configuration with specific heddle counts for each shaft:
- Shafts 1 & 2: 56 heddles each
- Shafts 3 & 4: 40 heddles each
- Shafts 5 & 6: 56 heddles each
- Shafts 7 & 8: 36 heddles
The weaving draft is treadled according to a specific sequence that creates the deflected double weave pattern. Plain weave is used for the initial spread and as a foundation technique. A weft protector of slippery yarn is woven at the beginning and removed after washing to protect the scarf edges during the finishing process.
Materials: Yarns and Equipment
Warp Yarns:
- Jagger Spun Zephyr 2/18 in Copper (784 yards) and Aegean (112 yards plus 8 additional yards if floating selvedges are used). This yarn is a luxury blend of 50% merino wool and 50% silk, with a yardage of 5,040 yards per pound and 1,120 yards per hank, providing excellent drape and luster.
- 8/2 Tencel in Sienna and Salmon (304 yards each). This yarn is 100% Lyocell, a cellulose fiber known for its smooth texture and sheen, with a yardage of 3,360 yards per pound.
Weft Yarns:
- Jagger Spun Zephyr 2/18 in Copper (461 yards) and Aegean (66 yards), using the same luxury merino wool and silk blend as the warp.
- 8/2 Tencel in Salmon (389 yards), providing visual contrast and dimensional texture in the finished fabric.
Note: The Aegean Blue color is no longer available from WEBS; Marine Blue is recommended as a substitute colorway.
Equipment Requirements:
- 8-shaft loom, minimum width of 13 inches
- 3 shuttles and 3 bobbins for managing multiple weft colors simultaneously
- 15-dent reed (using 2 ends per dent) or 10-dent reed (using 3 ends per dent) for achieving the sett of 30 ends per inch
- Standard weaving tools for dressing the loom and managing the warp
Pattern Specifications
The scarf is warped with 376 ends (or 378 ends if floating selvedges are desired) at a sett
