Valley Yarns Khafre Cowl

What Is Being Made

The Khafre is a fitted neckwarmer cowl designed by Julie Turjoman. This cozy accessory features finished measurements of 8 inches wide by 22 inches in circumference, making it an elegant one-size garment perfect for layering over winter outfits. The cowl combines warmth with refined aesthetics, functioning as both a practical neckwarmer and a sophisticated fashion accessory.

Yarn and Materials

This project showcases Valley Yarns Deerfield, a sumptuous blend of 80% baby alpaca and 20% silk. The fiber composition delivers elegance, warmth, and a beautiful soft hand that makes it ideal for close-to-skin wear. Two colors of Deerfield are used: one skein each of Eggplant (Color A) and Deep Woods (Color B), with each skein containing 50 grams and 109 yards of yardage. Additional materials include US size 5 (3.75 mm) straight needles for the main fabric, US size 5 double-pointed needles for the I-Cord edging, stitch markers, and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Techniques and Construction Method

The Khafre employs a bottom-up construction method, with the piece worked back and forth in rows on straight needles rather than in the round. This flat knitting approach creates a rectangular fabric that is later seamed. The cowl features a distinctive two-color slip stitch pattern that adds depth and textural interest to the finished piece. A knitted-on I-Cord is worked along one short side of the cowl, and the piece is then seamed with the I-Cord overlapping the second short side, creating a clean yet decorative closure style.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used is a two-color slip stitch pattern, which creates visual texture and color variation without the complexity of stranded colorwork. The pattern is worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches on US size 5 needles when blocked. The I-Cord edging uses standard I-Cord construction techniques, which involve working a small tube of stitches and attaching it directly to the edge of the main fabric as it is created. Standard abbreviations used throughout the pattern include knit (K), purl (P), slip (Sl), yarn over (YO), and various increases and decreases.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Khafre requires solid foundational knitting skills including comfort with slip stitch patterns, seaming techniques, and attached I-Cord construction. While not a beginner project, it remains an accessible weekend knit for knitters with some experience, making it an excellent choice for those looking to expand their technical repertoire.
