What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Complete Kitchen and Dining Set eBook is a comprehensive weaving pattern collection designed by Anita Thompson and Leslie Ann Bestor. This downloadable PDF contains instructions for creating a coordinated collection of five kitchen and dining projects using two separate warps. The complete set includes a table runner, four placemats, four napkins, two dish towels, and one apron. All projects are designed to coordinate visually through the use of consistent colorways throughout the collection, with three colorway options available.

Projects Included

  • Warp 1 – The Table: Features a table runner, four placemats, and four napkins
  • Warp 2 – The Kitchen: Features two dish towels and one apron with pockets

Weaving Techniques Used

This eBook teaches multiple weaving techniques to create visual interest and variety across the five projects. The primary techniques employed include:

  • Summer and Winter Weave: A classic 2-tie weave structure modernized through strategic color placement in the warp. This technique creates a reversible fabric where both sides are equally attractive, offering a lighter "summer" side or darker "winter" side depending on preference.
  • Plain Weave: Used for the napkins to coordinate with the more complex Summer and Winter patterned table runner and placemats. Plain weave provides a clean, simple foundation that allows the stripe pattern to shine.
  • Twill Pattern: Featured in Warp 2 with two treadling options, allowing weavers to create variation within the dish towels while maintaining design cohesion.
  • Stripe Patterning: Integrated throughout the designs to create visual continuity across all five projects.

Stitches and Weave Structures

The eBook focuses on fundamental weaving structures rather than traditional hand-stitching. The primary weave structures include plain weave, Summer and Winter (a 2-tie weave), and twill variations. The apron requires basic sewing skills to construct pockets and finish edges after weaving is complete.

Materials

The Complete Kitchen and Dining Set Kit is designed to be used with 8/2 cotton yarn. The kit includes six cones of 8/2 cotton offered at a 25% discount, providing sufficient yardage for all five projects. The cotton fiber is ideal for kitchen and dining textiles as it offers durability, absorbency, and easy care properties. Weavers will need access to a weaving loom appropriate for the warp width and project specifications outlined in the PDF drafts.

Design Philosophy

This collection emphasizes color coordination and design cohesion across multiple functional homeware pieces. By using the same colors throughout both warps, the five projects create a unified, professional-looking kitchen and dining ensemble. The eBook allows weavers to explore different weave structures and complexity levels while maintaining visual harmony, making it suitable for weavers seeking to expand their technical skills while creating practical, beautiful home textiles.
