Bought 15 additional skeins of this yarn

I made the Fiddlehead Set pattern and had so many complements and requests that I ordered 15 additional skeins to make hats and mitts for Christmas gifts.

I am a veteran knitter. I know my yarns. This is not worsted weight. Sorry. I also ordered a DK weight at the same time which was actually THICKER than this "worsted weight" yarn. When I returned with my comment I got the response that "it does knit up with a stitch gauge of 5 stitches per inch on US 5-7 needle, which is the typical gauge for a worsted weight yarn." Sure, maybe if your tension is that of a toddler....

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southwick:

I made a beautiful purple crochet shawl. The drape of the yard is perfect. The shawl is soft and comforting. The color was deep and rich. This was a good buy for my project.

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southwick:

The yarn has been used for a tunic top with slightly gored front and back panels. What a beautiful yarn to knit with. Does not split. Drapes beautifully. Gorgeous colours...I ordered some other sample colours. Knits up quickly. Delighted!

Great yarn!

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southwick:

Pros:
Very soft and silky feeling
Great range of colors
Very affordable

Cons:
Not the best for amigurumi- I was determined to crochet my sister a panda made from this bamboo-blend yarn, but it is a bit splitty and is difficult to use with the smaller hooks you need to get a tight gauge for amigurumi
Also, since it's splitty and slippery (due to the bamboo content, I think), it's hard to weave in the ends

Beautiful but difficult to work with

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southwick:

Southwick has a gorgeous sheen, beautiful color saturation, and very pleasing hand - BUT this yarn is loosely plied and extremely prone to splitting. (Caveat: I am a perfectionist.) Working a simple garter stitch/slip stitch project has been a nightmare. I have had to frog numerous times and rework split stitches on just about every row. I tried four different needle types/needle tips, but the yarn split no matter what needles I used and just about drove me crazy. The finished fiber will be beautiful, but getting there is a nightmare.

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southwick:

This is a very nice cotton yarn with a little sheen that knits evenly. My only complaint is that it tends to split.

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southwick:

Knitting a baby blanket !
Love the weight and texture of this yarn. Must be worked carefully as it can easily split but it is worth the small amount of extra time spent and easily corrected in the next row if you find a split!

Super soft, great stitch definition. I'm using it to make the Cloe cardigan also from Webs. It has a lovely drape.

Pros

  • Colorful
  • Machine wash
  • Soft

Cons

  • Hard to hide ends
  • Slippery
  • Soft twist can be splitty

Best Uses

  • Close-to-skin clothing
  • Draped silhouettes
  • Warm weather tops and cardigans

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southwick:

I'm quite delighted with how this yarn knits up. It is slippery and took some adjustment but the finished product is so soft and pretty. I made the Sunrise Shrug to practice the lace, and am now starting the coordinating Tank. The rayon content leaves the fabric feeling silky with a heavy drape: wonderful against the skin!
