Next Step Rigid Heddle Weaving


We will learn new and different techniques for the rigid heddle loom including how to hemstitch, finger manipulation of your weaving to make warp and weft floats, Danish medallions, how to create texture, and how to include beading in your woven fabric. Students should have previous knowledge of rigid heddle weaving, and bring their loom already threaded for class.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Prerequisite: Introduction to Rigid Heddle Flip Loom Weaving or equivalent

Materials Required:

  • Rigid Heddle Loom with at least a 15” weaving width
  • 10-dent reed
  • Loom stand (if you have one)
  • 400 yards of a plied DK weight yarn; Instructor recommends Valley Yarns Northfield
  • 2-3 yards of a contrasting color DK weight yarn
  • 2-3 yards of a contrasting color worsted weight yarn
  • 2-3 yards of a contrasting color fingering weight yarn
  • One pick-up stick 12"or longer
  • Tapestry needle
  • seed beads size E or larger (available at JoAnns or Michaels stores
  • crochet hook small enough to go through the beads
  • scissors
  • one brown paper shopping bag
  • 6 strips of fabric or bulky yarn 14" long
  • material for taking notes


  1. Loom should be pre-threaded 12" x 56" (do NOT weave a header) for the sampler to be worked on in class.
