Choosing Aran Weight Yarn for Cables and Sweaters

Aran weight yarn, often sold as heavy worsted weight yarn, is a medium-heavy yarn that gives cables and textured stitches bold definition while still working up quickly. It's a favorite for sweaters, hats, mittens and blankets.

What Is Aran Weight Yarn?

Aran falls in the Craft Yarn Council's medium (4) category alongside worsted, but on the heavier end. Typical gauge is 16–18 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette on 4.5–5.5 mm (US 7–9) needles; crocheters usually use a 5–6 mm (H–J) hook. The name comes from the cabled fisherman sweaters of the Aran Islands.

Heavy Worsted vs. Aran Weight Yarn

In the US, "heavy worsted" and "aran" are used for the same thickness, so you can shop them together. Standard worsted is slightly finer (about 18–20 stitches per 4 inches). Many yarns are labeled worsted/aran because they work at either gauge, so check the ball band and swatch before you substitute.
